Expressing Our Appreciation

The University is providing three additional days off for officers of administration, officers of research, officers of the libraries, and support staff as special fall-winter break days.

November 19, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to express our gratitude for the hard work all of you have done, and continue to do, through a year of transition and change. In recognition, the University is providing three additional days off for officers of administration, officers of research, officers of the libraries, and support staff as special fall-winter break days.  These days are in addition to the two floating days allocated last May that were for use by the end of 2021, and in addition to regular vacation and personal days.

Schools and Departments may grant employees these special additional fall-winter break days off as operational needs permit. Many units are likely to give employees three additional days off in the week between Christmas and New Year’s.  Some may give employees an extra day off around Thanksgiving and then just two fall-winter break days between Christmas and New Year’s. Some units will need employees to work during these periods so they can meet important ongoing responsibilities—looking after patients, managing our facilities and systems, working on time-sensitive programmatic or research activities, attending to students who remain on campus or other student mentorship needs, and more.  For employees who are needed to meet these responsibilities when other employees may be given time off, units will provide floating days off which can be used up to March 31, 2022, under guidelines set by the School or Department, and subject to supervisor approval of the days to be taken off.

You can expect to hear more from your School or Department about which days will be treated as fall-winter break days for your unit.  Please be patient as your School or Department develops a plan that takes account of your unit’s circumstances.

Whether you are working on campus or remotely, all of us need time away from work for personal renewal and time with family and friends.  We hope these additional fall-winter break days offer some relief and recognition of the extraordinary efforts during this challenging period.

Thank you,
